Communication at the heart of project work

Spring at Graniitti this year is dedicated to one of the most important skills in project work: for communication.

Project work is often thought of as managing to-do lists, schedules, and work packages. In reality, most of a project manager's job is communication and interaction, listening to people, sparring, and making sure everyone has a common understanding of where they're going. That's why we invest in developing communication. It's not just a soft skill, it's the very core of project work.

This spring, we started a communications coaching process together with communications agency Kaiu and communications coach Pauliina Perttuli. The goal is to deepen our understanding of our own communication style and strengthen skills that support both teamwork and client work.

Communication is the true essence of project work

During the coaching, we stopped to examine our own strengths and areas for development as communicators. Listening, clarity, and considering the audience may seem obvious to us, but it is precisely their consistent practice that makes communication effective.

One of the main themes of the coaching was planning effective communication. Defining the right target group, goal and core message. When communication is built on these, it not only conveys information, but also builds trust and moves cooperation forward.

Digital interaction requires even more conscious presence. The ability to listen, ask questions, and build genuine understanding even when physical space and body language cannot be utilized. We focused on how to maintain presence and meaningful interaction in remote and hybrid encounters.

In multicultural teamwork, communication takes on even more dimensions. It is not just what we say that is important, but how we say it: respectfully, openly, and with an understanding of the cultural nuances of the situation. Communication is, above all, the ability to read the situation and adapt communication accordingly.

Leadership is communication and communication builds trust.

Project work is above all about leading people, creating a common direction and clarifying the goal. Good leadership does not mean just giving instructions, but the ability to listen, support, inspire trust and create a common understanding. Communication is at the heart of all this: not who speaks the loudest, but who succeeds in getting others interested, understanding and impressed.

Communication is the glue that binds people together and makes collaboration productive.

The coaching clarified the idea that none of us are ever complete communicators. Communication is a continuous process of adapting to situations, people, and shared goals. It is a skill that is developed step by step, one encounter at a time.

Communication is one of our most important tools and that is why we want to invest in its development. In May, we will continue with the second part of the communication training!
