Welcome to the sixth part of the Graniitti Insights series!

In the Graniitti Insights series, we get to know more deeply each month the different roles and experienced experts of Graniitti.

In this sixth part of the series, we get to know more deeply Lauri, Graniit's experienced technical project manager. Read below how to build and maintain effective cooperation and communication between project team members.

1. How long have you been with Graniitti?

- It will be 6 years in the fall.

2. What has been the best thing about working at Graniitti?

- I feel that the company values its employees and invests in us, I get support from my supervisor if necessary, I have received interesting and varied assignments where I meet new people.

3. What do you enjoy doing in your free time the most?

- Sports hobbies (crossfit, swimming, kayaking, jogging) bring a good counterbalance to terminal work and the time spent with the family makes you forget the troubles of the IT world.

4. Describe your role as a technical project manager?

- The role of the technical project manager changes according to the client. Much is the same, but no assignment or role is identical. The technical project manager is expected to have a more in-depth understanding of what is being done in the project and can possibly participate on a small scale in more technical tasks, such as testing.

5. What are the key responsibilities in your role?

- Plan the execution of the work, ensure that the work will be done as planned and update the plans whenever necessary, communicate with different stakeholders so that the goal and the status of the project are clear to everyone. Keeping the whole under control.

6. What are the most common challenges in your role, and how do you overcome them?

- The most typical challenges in projects are challenges related to schedules and resources. Few projects have full-time employees, so everyone always has other work, which is challenging to reconcile and prioritize with the project's schedules. Timetable and resource issues can be solved by thinking and prioritizing together with personal supervisors/team leaders, the steering group, or other project managers, where can be flexible and who can be flexible. Flexibility can be made in schedules, costs, scope or quality of work.

7. How do you ensure the success of projects?

- The key to the success of the project is that I first understand what I want to do and why so that I can share the same understanding with the project team and the most important stakeholders, and of course the project must have the right people.

8. What kind of strategies and tools do you use in project planning, monitoring and evaluation?

- There are different strategies and tools for project planning and monitoring. Client companies often provide their own models and tools for this. The most common tools for monitoring and managing work is Jira.

9. How do you see the role changing or developing in the future, especially from the point of view of the development of technology and project management?

- I believe that there is always a need for people who ensure that the work is carried out according to goals, whether the name of the role is project manager, Scrum master, PO or something else. The role of the project manager will certainly develop, and several project management models have already adopted various principles of agile development.

10. How do you build and maintain effective cooperation and communication between project team members?

- Modern means of communication make communication technically easy, but cooperation is best facilitated when you can meet people face to face. I prefer regular face-to-face meetings. Using video in Teams meetings also helps. As part of communication, I consider it important that e.g. the project's meeting notes are made and distributed to all concerned, available in e.g. Confluence or the Teams workspace.

11. What do you like best about your role?

- What I like best about the role is that I get to see and familiarize myself with new technologies in technical projects. I get to see from the inside how it works in different companies, I get to meet new people regularly and I know that every project always ends on time, no matter how difficult it is.
