Nina Huhtakangas: Lead yourself first so you can lead others

During my working career, I have collected thoughts about management in a little red notebook. I have kept those thoughts with me as a guideline in many different life situations. I wrote one of the most important instructions in that red notebook more than 20 years ago and it reads like this: "Lead yourself first so you can lead others."

To lead yourself, you need to have self-awareness. For me, this practically means planning your work down to the calendar and implementing that plan in a way that allows me to be flexible with your plan and prioritize the situation when necessary. As an impulsive person, I know that I sometimes react strongly with emotion. Emotions need to be and are allowed to be visible, but I can anticipate and control my own emotional reaction when necessary, especially in a situation where I need to show others direction and hope.

By leading people, things also follow

Another important rule of thumb I have is related to leading people. In my red notebook it is written in the form "By leading people, things also follow."

I got to know the world of projects in the early 2000s. Project management emphasized only managing things and never talked about managing people. However, quite early on, I realized that it is about leading people towards goals. In practice, this means listening to people, supporting them, motivating them and giving them responsibility. In addition, leadership requires a lot of high-quality interaction and communication, which creates commitment.

Emotions at play

Emotional skills are also important skills in working life. Emotional skills include expressing and regulating one's own emotions, identifying needs and valuing oneself. So, you must first know yourself in order to lead others, meet them empathetically and create a good emotional climate. The emotional climate is everyone's responsibility and it is worth investing in it, because research has shown that it significantly affects work performance and the ability to solve problems.

I have been lucky that during my working career I have been able to work in good working communities in terms of emotional climate. The meaningful moments in these communities have left traces on me that have traveled with me and influenced my choices. These meaningful moments have always been accompanied by emotions. The most memorable projects of my career have been those where I have put all my know-how and a little more, rejoiced and sometimes cried, enjoyed the journey and celebrated achievements. So I can't say that emotions weren't involved.

Happy New Year!

Nina
